@f02@t4@cLITERAL DEVICES Part 1
@t5@f00By RokDaZone
@t5@f00This is an open letter to the team of
SCENE LYRICS. First of all, I would
like to thank you for the spirit to
create a mag including only short
stories and poems, because I
personally think, the 'scene' badly
needs something like interlectual
entertaiment.
But never-the-less, I have to critise
a certain feature and surely hope that
you will see this as constructive
criticism, folks. I do not want to
argue about the short-stories, I have
read here some of them were really
nice - but there was something strange
about the, well, POEMS. Yes, I know:
They were rhyming and you used
@^
@t5@f00romantic or even poetical language ( I
do not talk about the German "poem"
here! ), but I have to critise the
simplicity of style you have used. Do
not get me wrong, I really admire the
work you did and I also do not want to
state that I am able do it better!
Let us face it mates. We are living
in a fast society with increasing
amounts of impression, e.g. TV,
computer, cinema, radio, ... and we
got used to it in a way, that we do
not reflect anymore, because deeper re
flection means, we have to spend time
for thinking and modern people do not
have any time. Your poems, however,
are just one further part of this,
@#
@^
@t5@f00because - as beautifully they may have
been written - they do not affort real
reflection. You are inviting the
reader to overfly the poem and then
forget the intention and I do not
think this is what you wanted to
achieve, or am I wrong? My opinion
results from the missing of literal
devices. "From what???" LITERAL
DEVICES - The most important feature,
when writing fictional texts of any
kind. There are quite a lot of them,
e.g. HUMOUR, IMAGERY REPETITION,
VOCABULARY, ... to name but a few.
These devises are used to force the
reader to read between the lines,
because on the second view things may
occur just the other way around, then
on the first one. The reader is being
manipulated!
For example: Any persons, found in
@^
@t5@f00possession of private property, have
simply to be persuaded to share their
ownership with other individuals,
indeed. In this very senseless
sentence you have been manipulated in
at least four (!) different ways,
because certain statements and
expression are differently expressed
and therefore you will keep them in
mind, without realising it. 1.
Repetition of the consonant 'P' ( =
Alliteration ). 2. Intensifying
adverb: "INDEED" 3. Attitudinal
adverb : "SIMPLY" 4. Repetition of
similar vowels: "shARE thEIR" ( =
Assonance ). I think that now you
will see how important literal devices
may be to stress certain statements.
Furthermore, you are able to play with
language by using them. This is e.g.
what makes WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE so
@#
@^
@t5@f00interesting and entertaining to read.
Well, some of you reading this may
believe me, some may not. The second
article about the devices however
contains a rather short list about the
most important literal devices and
maybe it is worth to read them, if you
want to write or understand poems or
other texts. This list of course is
kept briefly and therefore you maybe
will not understand the real meaning
of the single device at once. It is
meant as a short description of
several devices, so you can look them
up in your encyclopedia to get the
real meaning. Believe me, it is worth
the work... >>> RokDaZone <<<
